When this dog came to Animal Aid, he was extremely afraid. After an accident that left him paralyzed from the hips down, he was known to just stay in a corner and tremble. Afraid of where he was, afraid of his new condition and petrified of humans.
When I first got to Animal Aid, Jim (the co-founder) said to me as he pointed to him, “If you can get a smile out of that dog, then you’ve really done something here.” I was told that he’d just begun warming up to humans and allowing them to touch him. Mostly he stayed away in his corner of the tent.
Well, it didn’t take long until I fell in love with him. And miraculously, he fell in love with me too. In just a matter of days, when he’d hear my voice, he’d come running (on his 2 front legs). Or if he heard me being affectionate to another one of the handicapped dogs, he’d butt in to have me pet him instead.
He’d been so out of the loop with staff and volunteers, nobody even knew his name, or if he’d been given one. So, I was allowed to name him. Karl.
Now, we sit together every day in the mornings. His tail started moving the other day. His legs have begun to twitch. He has a smile on his face. If I accomplish nothing else in my time here, he will be my legacy.
Ele bathing time is 1pm sharp at the ENP.
